If the upsurge of Covid-19 cases that Macau has been enduring since June 19th is making you restless and anxious, the Macau Ricci Institute may be able to help. The Jesuit think-tank canceled most of its activities, but it will still organize its monthly session of its Contemplation and Leadership course.
The virtual-only event will be held on the 19th of July and the participants are expected to reflect both – on the last chapter of the Gospel according to Saint John and Psalm 145. “The on-the-spot contemplation session was canceled. However, the next online contemplation course is scheduled for July 19th, and it will try to recapture “contemplation and leadership” with the last chapter of the Gospel of St. John and Psalm 145. Each participant is challenged to reflect on his or her vocation,” Macau Ricci Institute Director Fr Stephan Rothlin told O Clarim.
With the rates of anxiety and depression on the rise, the daily practice of contemplation may be the key, the Swiss priest claims, to deal with the current health crisis in a more creative way. He says, “I am convinced that the regular daily practice of contemplation is the best mental preparation to deal with the various current crises in a most creative way. We need silence, as there is always a risk of falling into the trappings of a superficial way of life.”
The ongoing Covid-19 outbreak forced the Macau Ricci Institute to postpone till September a lecture that was initially scheduled for June 29th. The initiative, which aimed to promote the recently-launched Deignan Award for Responsible Entrepreneurship, had South Korean researcher Stephen Yong-Seung Park as a speaker. “We had indeed planned a couple of lectures and talks related to the first Deignan Award for Responsible Entrepreneurship in order to highlight key aspects of what sustainability and corporate social responsibility are all about in the context of Macau and Hong Kong,” says Father Rothlin.
He adds, “In the case of Stephen Young, he has served already as a respondent to the inspiring forum by Dr. Christine Lai on June 8th about a variety of aspects of Confucian entrepreneurship related to the Deignan Award and solidarity across different generations. In the context of the war in Ukraine, I find the project of Dr. Stephen Young on “Business for Peace” very enlightening.”
