Saint Pius X Academy turns 60: In this 154-year-old heritage marvel, the halls are alive with the sound of music

The Saint Pius X Music Academy will celebrate its 60th anniversary on October 8th. To mark the occasion, Bishop Stephen Lee Bun-sang will unveil the busts of the school’s founder, Father Áureo Castro, and the school’s patron, Saint Pius X, in the new premises of the institution. The academy has moved lock, stock and barrel to the former building of the Matteo Ricci College, not far from the government headquarters in Macau.

Reviving musical heritage: Saint Pius X Academy offers pipe organ course for advanced piano students

With the hope of creating a community of organists to serve the Diocese of Macau, Saint Pius X Music Academy will be offering, for the first time ever, a certification course in playing the pipe organ, one of the most complex musical instruments ever created. Mrs. Basilla Sam, the director of the Academy talks to O Clarim about the course.

BASILIA SAM: “It is my hope that the new premises will become a home for music”

New opportunities, but also new responsibilities. The Saint Pius X Music Academy has started the new academic year in its new premises, at Rua da Praia do Bom Parto. The change, says the institution’s director, allowed the recruitment of new teachers and opened the doors to new development perspectives, but also to greater challenges and obligations. The institution currently teaches nearly two hundred students. Mr. Basilla Sam spoke with O Clarim about the road ahead.
