A way of purification towards Easter

“If we look at the gospel now, what does Jesus do in the desert? He’s not just a new Israel out in the wilderness, he’s also a new Adam so whereas Adam was tempted in the garden of paradise, now Jesus the new Adam is tempted in the desert. Because that’s what our sin has done, it turns the paradise of creation into a desert. And just like Adam was tempted by the devil in the book of Genesis, now Jesus is tempted by the devil in the desert. And just as Adam had three temptations: lust of the eyes, lust of the flesh, pride of life, so now the devil hits Jesus with the same three temptations. But unlike Adam, Jesus conquers it.”

Continuing Conversion

Sin is bad company. It is opposed to what we all want in life: happiness, which is made up of love, compassion, peace and joy – and continuing prayer! The greatest thing: God is infinitely merciful and always ready to open the door of forgiveness. Sin is forgiven by the mercy of God through Christ. By acknowledging and confessing our sins with repentance, we are on the way home, on the way – like the Prodigal Son – to the embrace of our Father.

Out of the good treasures of the heart

Created in the image of God, each person possesses a fundamental goodness and dignity. However, our human nature bears the wound of original sin, making us inclined to evil and subject to error. “Man is divided in himself. As a result, the whole life of men, both individual and social, shows itself to be a struggle, and a dramatic one, between good and evil, between light and darkness” (CCC 1707) .

HEROES OF THE CATHOLIC FAITH IN THE EAST: The daily life of João de Brito (3)

It seems to us, therefore, that we can only understand João de Brito taking into account the Christian perspective that the Father’s Kingdom is not of this world. John’s actions stemmed from an infinite love for his neighbor that he wanted to spread among populations that did not know Jesus Christ. João’s daily life was therefore based on the Gospel; it was there that he found the strength to Christianize and to bear patiently (we can even say lovingly) all the obstacles he faced and all the sacrifices he went through. This man was happy because he believed that his activity led to the salvation of many of his brothers and that in this way he fully fulfilled the mission to which God had destined him. Living in the world, João lived for values that are not confined to our earthly existence.

To you that hear

What kind of Good News is this? “But I say to you that hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. To him who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also.” (Lk 6:27-38). Jesus’s words sound almost cruel and inhuman, because Jesus is not talking about patiently bearing with an annoying colleague, nor about forgiving someone who has done terrible things to us but later repented.  Jesus is talking about being merciful while enduring abuse and the abuser shows no repentance. An unthinkable situation.
