I am quite sure that everyone is aware of the current situation that we are all in, since the past two years we can only think about the coronavirus pandemic that has taken the world by storm. We should certainly ask ourselves where we are now, not only in terms of the fight against the virus, but also in terms of our spiritual response to the situation that we are facing all over the world. If we look at that we certainly have some reasons to be concerned about, because the pandemic has not only left many sick and caused many deaths, directly or indirectly, but has also affected the emotional status of so many people.
One of the things that I assume has more affected people, is the surging of new variants when everyone thought that the worst was behind our back. Now we are fighting with Omicron and if we look at the situation in Hong Kong, we can see that despite all the restrictions, the count of infections is going up.
What is the pandemic conveying to religious people? It certainly reminds us that we are frail and that we are not here forever. Regardless of the advancement in technology and medicine, we are not invulnerable, we are not superheroes.
I think that Church leaders have to ask themselves what impression has the pandemic made in the hearts of people and how much they still consider themselves to be part of the Church. In many countries in the world we can see a dramatic drop in Church’s attendance. What was an impression at the beginning, now it is a sad fact. We should not think that this is all the fault of the covid 19, because this process was already underway. But now it is so evident that it is difficult to deny it. So there are many questions that people in various walks of life are bound to answer.
