To celebrate the Feast Day of St. Cecilia, the Academia de Musica Sao Pio X held the “Ode to Music Choral concert” at the St. Dominic Church on 28 November at 8 pm Sunday. Admission was free of charge.
The concert featured the reinterpretations of the choral works from Macau, Hong Kong and Taiwan, which include Father Áureo Castro’s Céu e Firmamento (Heaven and Firmament) and Panis Angelicus, Professor Doming Lam’s Our Fath and Ave Maria, Fr. Clement Kong’s iBreviarium and 愛之歌, Dr. Viola Yuen’s 彌撒曲 and 天主的子女, Mr. Anthony Lau’s求主援助. The concert allowed the public to have a better understanding of the hymns composed by the composers of the three regions.
Father Áureo Castro was a composer, music educator and conductor, who established the Academia de Musica Sao Pio X in 1962 to provide music training to students who wished to learn music. It was an important step in the history of music in Macau.
Mr. Doming Lam was born in 1926 in Macau. He was a composer and conductor, who applied modern techniques based on tradition in the 60s and was known as the “Father of new music in Hong Kong.”
Fr. Clement Kong liked music since his youth. He followed the Second Vatican Council’s Sacrosanctum Concilium. His polyphonic works and harmony are full of style.
Dr. Viola Yuen has been actively involved in music composition, arranging, conducting and choral work in Hong Kong, with a particular interest in the use and creation of vocal works and a wide range of styles. She is a now part time lecturer in the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, the conductor of HSUHK Sinfonietta, the Director of A Cappella Concert with Sregnis Singers in Hong Kong, the founder of Coro Allegra and Chummy Singers and the secretary of the Hong Kong Composers’ Guild.
Anthony Lau live in Taiwan is the music scholar, composer, music educator, who studied in the Saint Joseph Seminary, research in the Christian religious music, western music history and music theory. He has ordained as a Monsignor in 1994, he became the Professor of Music in the Fu Jen Catholic University in 1998. Since 2008 he became the Chair Professor in the Fu Jen Catholic University.
Due to the pandemic, the concert was pre-recorded at the Hong Kong Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and then premiered in Macau.
