PARISHIONERS WELCOME A STUNNING NEW PIPE ORGAN – A First-Look at the New Pipe Organ in the Cathedral

Fr Leonard E Dollentas

The Macau Cathedral renowned for its simple yet stunning architecture is embracing the digital age — not in its appearance, but in its sound. The Cathedral recently completed the installations of its state-of-the-art pipe organ. After some months being closed for the installations of this church instrument, the Cathedral was reopened last December 7, just a day before the Immaculate Conception and the Christmas festivities ahead. Seeing the beauty of the new pipe organ adding much dignity to the main altar of the Cathedral, an ardent parishioner blurted out with awe:   “Really amazing, it’s been a long time coming. It means a lot to the whole church goers of the Cathedral.” A young Portuguese parishioner also said: “Indeed, Christmas at the Cathedral is set to sound better than ever this year, because the Cathedral  just unveiled its brand-new, world-class pipe organ.” The new pipe organ has indeed inspired awe among the parishioners and even tourists visiting Macau. This massive musical upgrade has been years in waiting and making. The design and planning process stretched over multiple seasons, with organizers meticulously shaping every detail.

The faithful of the Cathedral is grateful to the pipe organ donor- a person who recognizes the vital role of music in worship and the importance of preserving this beautiful instrument in Churches. The donor even brought together a renowned Canadian pipe organ company to design and build it to suit the Cathedral interiors. The project team brought together some of the finest woodworkers and metal craftsmen to build the instrument essentially from the ground up.  This new  pipe organ  is a testament to the enduring legacy of music in worship in the Catholic Diocese of Macau. It is not only a musical addition but also serves an evangelical purpose, engaging the community through concerts and cultural events. It will bring its own unique sound and character, contributing to the rich musical heritage of Macau.  The process of its installations has been a meticulous endeavor, involving careful design, construction, and integration into the church’s sacred spaces. This new instrument not only enhances the worship experience but also serve as a symbol of the Cathedral community’s commitment to the authentic and communal act of giving God the adoration, reverence, and praise through music.

Seeing the organ finally installed and its tuning near its completion has been a deeply rewarding moment for everyone involved.  The team behind the project shares a feeling of pure gratitude. The long wait, they say, was absolutely worth it. Music has always been a pillar of the Cathedral’s faith communities, and this new pipe organ promises to elevate worship even further, lifting spirits, enriching praise, and filling the cathedral with a truly heavenly sound. The beauty and power of the organ are already on full display. Although, the completion of its complex process of tuning is still underway, parishioners  are already excited to finally hear it played at Mass. And maybe soon, with the holiday season in full swing, it’s the perfect time to stop in, listen, and experience it for yourself.
