The extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion of the English community at the Se Cathedral led the Holy Rosary on the first Sunday, October 4, 2020.
The month of October each year is dedicated to the Most Holy Rosary since the liturgical feast of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary is celebrated annually on October 7. The feast was introduced by Pope St Pius V (1504-1572) in the year 1571 to commemorate the miraculous victory of the Christian forces in the Battle of Lepanto on October 7, 1571. The pope attributed the victory more to the “weapon” of the Rosary than the power of cannons and the valor of the soldiers who fought there.
Indeed, the months of May and October are special months on the Catholic Church’s liturgical calendar, dedicated to the veneration of the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus. The May devotion is based on the May 13, 1917 apparitions of Mary at Fatima in Portugal to three shepherd children, Lucia Santos, Francisco and Jacinta Marto.
Though some may object that the prayer is repetitious, St Josemaria Escriva explained: “Blessed be that monotony of Hail Marys which purifies the monotony of your sins!”
