CIRCULAR LETTER FOR THE EXTRAORDINARY MISSIONARY MONTH OF OCTOBER 2019

BM/262/2019

Macau, 12 September, 2019

Dear Parish Priests, Religious Superiors, Catholic School Principals, and Heads of Church Organisations,

For the month of October 2019, the whole Church revives her missionary awareness and commitment as we commemorate the centenary of the Apostolic Letter Maximum Illud of Pope Benedict XV (30 November 1919). Pope Francis, in his message, defines the importance of having this mission month. “Celebrating this month will help us first to rediscover the missionary dimension of our faith in Jesus Christ, a faith graciously bestowed on us in baptism. Our filial relationship with God is not something simply private, but always in relation to the Church. Through our communion with God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, we, together with so many of our other brothers and sisters, are born to new life.” — MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS FRANCIS FOR WORLD MISSION DAY 2019 Baptized and Sent: The Church of Christ on Mission in the World.

In response to the extraordinary missionary month suggested by our Holy Father in this coming October, the Diocese of Macau is organizing the following two major events:

1. God Loves You: A Missionary Festival!

Date: 6th October 2019 (Sunday)

Time: 11 am – 5 pm (Opening: 12 noon)

Place: Tap Seac Plaza

2. World Mission Day Mass (Eucharist)

Date: 19th October 2019 (Saturday)

Time: 8 pm

Place: Ruins of St. Paul

In order to facilitate greater participation of all the Catholics of Macau in the above activities, I would like to specially request that parishes, communities, institutions and schools make appropriate arrangements, including  suspending Sunday School on 6th October to encourage children and their families to join the Missionary Festival. Moreover, it is recommended that all parishes, church organisations and Catholic schools avoid holding other public and extracurricular activities on 6th and 19th October.

Finally, I would like to wish this year’s Extraordinary Missionary Month activities every success in contributing to the missionary work of the universal church.

Most Rev. Stephen Lee Bun Sang
Bishop of Macau
