On May 26, a group of Filipino priests and religious sisters in Macau gathered at the Catholic Pastoral Center for Migrants to share their experiences and to understand the struggles faced by those they often serve on a regular basis.

One of the challenges encountered is how to deal with situations or problems affecting several local communities of migrant workers in Macau. Apart from Filipinos, since there are also Vietnamese, Indonesian, Timorese and Nepalese, among others.

“Many of them feel lonely and misunderstood, or even with little support from the community or society,” Sr Maria Rosa Viloria, RGS, told us, adding, “They are far away from their native countries, often without relatives here, that’s why they do not have anyone to support them.”

She also referred to those who struggle with health conditions, economic difficulties and domestic or relationship problems. “They often earn very little for the cost of living in Macau. Even so, they have no choice, because they have families to support,” Sr Viloria said, while stressing the importance of missionary work to these communities, in order to give some comfort to those who experience difficulties, sometimes extreme.
