The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) launched a new Bachelor of Biology and Biotechnology degree programme. Applications are now open for the 2025/2026 academic year. The Bachelor of Biology and Biotechnology at USJ is designed to provide students with a solid understanding of biological systems and their applications in developing technologies and solutions to improve our lives. As biology emerges as the key scientific field of the 21st century, latest advancements in molecular biology and bioinformatics have set ways for major breakthroughs and developments in biotechnology. This programme adopts a cross-disciplinary learning approach, integrating subjects such as mathematics, chemistry, physics and earth sciences in the first two years to establish a strong scientific foundation. In the third and fourth years, students focus on specialized modules such as microbiology, developmental biology, environmental and food biotechnology, and medical biotechnology. Biology and Biotechnology play a crucial role in addressing current global challenges such as those relating to food security, sustainable energy, and healthcare advancements. This programme provides students with the knowledge and skills required to tackle to address issues.
The launch of the new programme is the culmination of USJ’s ingoing commitment to excellence in the fields of Biosciences, Biodiversity, and in particular Marine Sciences. During this academic year, USJ and its Institute of Science and Environment (ISE) co-organised and hosted several significant events, including the 5th Annual Meeting of the International Joint Research Center of Marine Biology, the Annual meeting of the Sino-Portugal Joint Lab for Marine and Environmental Sciences, the 1st Sino-Luso Conference in Blue Biotechnology, and the 1st Colloquium on Blue Economy Cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries. Further highlighting the success in this field, the Times Higher Education Impact Ranking 2025 recognized USJ’s achievements in the category “SDG14 – Life Below Water”, ranking it 1st in Macao, 4th within Mainland China and the Hong Kong and Macao SARs, and placing it within the 101-200 range globally, despite increased competition in the sector.
