MY MUSIC JOURNEY – Wong Hou Wang’s compositions featured in concert

The My Music Journey – Wong Hou Wang’s Music Composition concert was hosted on August 15, 2020 at 5:30 PM at the Clube Militar de Macau. During the concert, Mr Wong performed ten of his own original musical works that are characterized by diverse styles and elegant melodies. An audience of more than sixty people were in attendance, and they enthusiastically responded to these works while enjoying an evening of melodious and pleasant music.

Mr Wong is an advanced-level student at the Academia de Música S. Pio X (the Academia). He is seventeen years old and a current graduate of Macau Pui Ching Middle School. Since childhood, he has developed a deep emotional connection to music and popular science writing. In 2013, he officially started at the Academia, where he learned piano and composition from his teacher Miss Lei Vai Fan. At the Academia, he was one of the first students to participate in the New Experiences with Composition program. During 2018 and 2019, he performed two musical works, and the Academia later arranged for him to learn from Chinese University of Hong Kong professor Dr. Viola Yuen to enhance his composition skills, which led to him creating the musical works that were performed at this concert. We believe that Mr. Wong is currently Macau’s youngest teenager to create multiple original musical works and perform them at this special event. This year, Mr. Wong won the 2020 Macau Association of Composers, Authors & Publishers (MACA) Scholarships.

This concert started with the compositions The Sergeant and the Dancer’s Dream and Asymptote as the prologue. These were immediately followed by eight compositions that were being performed for the first time and based on Image Album. These included the compositions Home Thoughts and School Adventure and even the three closely related compositions Stellar, Matsuri, and Fragmentation. Image Album was very important for Mr. Wong during his childhood. The final composition Trilogia was comprised of three movements: Their Reunion, Their Uprising, and Their Determination that expressed the composer’s feelings regarding his living environment. A total of eleven performers played this composition, which not only used different types of instruments that were compatible with each other and had tuning that fluctuated between high and low notes, but it also included singers whose voices touched the audience’s heartstrings and brought them into Mr. Wong’s world of music. The concert ended successfully amidst the audience’s enthusiastic applause.

The guests that attended the concert included: the Academia’s Director Fr. João Evangelista Lau Him Sang and Vice-Director Miss Basilla Sam Weng Io, the Clube Militar de Macau’s Vice-Director Mr. António Alberto da Cunha Bruno Soares and the committee member Mr. Tiago Pereira, the Macau composer/writer/MACA CEO Mr. Ung Kuoc Yan, the Music Director of My Music Journey and advisor Miss Lei Vai Fan, as well as Miss Filomena Leong, a teacher at the Academia. Furthermore, all of the performers were musicians and students from Macau, including the Macau Cultural Communication Ambassadors Cheng Wai Leong, Park Hae-un, Ng Chi Fan, Ng Pui I, Lin Shi Han, Lei San Ian, Cheong Tak Kai, Ip Wai Man, Patricio Manhao Cheng, Franklin Hor Chung Yueng, Si Nok Hang, Lou Hou Long

This concert was organized with the Academia’s help, and we would particularly like to express our gratitude to the Clube Militar de Macau for their willingness to provide us with a performance space free of charge, as well as our sponsors Tom Lee Music and Macau’s Anthony Studio. Everyone involved in this concert hopes that it can encourage more young people to participate in music creation in the future while also promoting an environment of music creation among young people in Macau.
