ASK THE LITURGIST (36) – Kneeling to receive Communion

– Don Enrico Finotti

And the communion on the knees? It’s still possible?

It is necessary that in the chapel of the Blessed Sacrament there is a balustrade, stable and suitable, to allow the individual faithful to kneel to worship the Blessed Sacrament and also to receive the Holy Communion outside Mass. It must be remembered that, even if the Episcopal Conferences allowed to approach the Holy Communion standing and receiving it in the hand, the norm of the universal Church continues to admit the traditional way of Communion, received on the knees and on the mouth, as established by the General Instruction of the Roman Missal: “… the faithful communicate on their knees or standing, as established by the Episcopal Conference … (GIRM 160 our translation)” … the Sacrament is received in the mouth or, in the places where it has been allowed, on the hand, as it is preferred … “(GIRM 161 our translation). It is therefore convenient that the faithful, who ask for the Holy Communion outside Mass, can receive it commendably in this way.
