The English-speaking community of the Cathedral parish of Macau joyfully celebrated the last Sunday of the month of May, honoring Mary as they offered prayers and flowers to her image. The English speaking community is composed of the Filipinos, Indians, a handful from South Korea, Mexico and Argentina and some Portuguese who prefer English for their Sunday Mass. Although coming from different nationalities, all were united in their closeness to our Lady.
The celebration commenced after the 5:00 PM Mass. The Filipinos came with their traditional dress for women and the barong-tagalog for the men. Two ladies dressed in Indian sari and two Portuguese children dressed in traditional Portuguese clothes represented their respective countries.
The community prayed to our Lady for peace in the whole world, for persecuted Christians. The Portuguese children offered a special prayer to Our Lady of Fatima.
Since other churchgoers were not able to bring flowers, some wholeheartedly shared their flowers to others, a moving part of the event. The choir intoned a joyful hymn to the Blessed Mother signaling the flower offering. Soon everyone was happily marching down the aisle towards the image of our Lady of Fatima clutching their flowers to be offered to the Virgin Mary, with fervent prayers for the world, for the needy, for the suffering and for the families they left in their homelands.
