The Myanmar Social Club of Macau (MSM) organized for the fourth consecutive year their country’s biggest traditional event – the Myanmar New Year Festival. The gathering was not only an opportunity to observe a tradition but also to provide mutual support. The indoor program was held last April 14 at Kam Pek Community Theater with around 500 persons in attendance.
The day started with a fellowship lunch featuring Myanmar traditional and festive dishes. The “Thingyan” festival involves the sprinkling of water to signify the cleansing from the sins of the previous year and welcoming good fortune and prosperity for the future. This was performed by the Myanmar young girls in their national costume. This was followed by performances of traditional Myanmar dances and songs showcasing the diverse culture of their country.
MSM chairman Mr Ricky Myint’s delivered the welcome remarks. The event was graced by special guests: namely, Mr. Kyaw Zayar Lin and his family – Deputy Consul General of Myanmar Consulate General in Hong Kong; Mr. U Han Win and family; Sr Julian Devoy – Director of the Good Shepherd Center; and Fr Alejandre Vergara, SOLT – Apostolic Head Servant of the Pastoral Care for Migrants. Other guests included Ms Susan Wong, Mr Steve Kam, Ms Margarida Rosa Castilho Lameiras, Ms Sann Sann Thay.
MSM membership has grown from last year’s 1,600 members, to more than 2,000.
