Like Jesus, his Master, Cardinal Pell is under trial.
The Gospel of John reports Pilate’s verdict: “I find no guilt in him.” Then he washes his hands in front of the crowd. But the crowd continues to shout: “Crucify him!” Jesus’s trial is repeated, a trial based on a conspiracy backed by false claims.
Cardinal Pell seems to be walking up the hills of Golgotha, carrying the sins of other priests charged with sexual abuse. The trumped-up charges against him are no different from the crown of thorns hammered into Jesus’ Sacred Head.
The Lord has gifted him with a share in His Passion.
Cardinal Pell was one of the brave bishops in the Church who dared to make sure that the holiness of the Church is upheld. While he was serving as Archbishop of Melbourne between 1996 and 2001, he established what was known as the “Melbourne Response,” a protocol to address sexual abuse.
At times, it happens that when one stands out from the crowd by setting an example, he may attract opponents.
However, it is the power of the Almighty that alters the course of events. We as believers pray that the justice will be served on earth as it is in heaven.
The Passion is the climax of the life of Jesus. This year, it has come earlier than expected.
