On 17th May 2021, the Director of Centro de Cultura e Artes Performativas Cardeal Newman (CCCN Macau) de Macau, Agnes Wong, along with two staff members attended the Technology and Innovation for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Summit at the United Nations University.
As the only UN presence in Macau, the United Nations University brought together government, academia, private sector, and NGOs to share their experiences in advancing the SDGs, examining the SDGs’ roles in Macau’s strategic development plan, and explore collaborative opportunities particularly in the areas of digital technologies for the SDGs. They hoped to raise awareness about the SDGs and to celebrate successes as well as learning from the challenges in implementing the SDGs in Macau. The Summit focused on the five Ps of the SDGs: People, Prosperity, Peace, Partnership, and Planet.
People are at the heart of long-term sustainability. The panel of speakers on this topic brought together distinguished local stakeholders to share their views and to showcase the excellent work they have been doing in Macau to reduce poverty, eliminate hunger, warrant good health and well-being as well as quality education, while also pursuing gender equality and ensuring equal access to clean water and sanitation.
The panel on prosperity focused on achieving affordable and clean energy, decent work and economic growth, Industry, innovation and infrastructure, reduced inequalities, and sustainable cities and communities.
The panel centered on peace discussed the way forward to guarantee the core values of the UN Charter: peace, justice, respect, human rights, tolerance, and solidarity.
As for partnership, recognized the need for “strengthening the means of implementation and revitalizing the global partnership for sustainable development.”
Focus on the planet showcased work on biodiversity, environmental protection, and climate change mitigation in Macau.
The Director and staff of CCCN Macau are looking forward to expanding its motto of “Heart speaks to Heart” within a more global scope, keeping in mind the words of Chinese Philosopher Lao Tzu: “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.”
