On 13 September, during the Chinese Mass at 9:15 AM, Bishop Stephen Lee held the annual rite for two new altar boys and eight altar servers.
During his homily, Bishop Lee said, “I hope that their parents and mentors will implant forgiveness in the hearts of these boys and girls and from their young age, teaching them not to be jealous or hateful. Let us ask the Sacred Heart of Jesus to purify their hearts, so that they be loving, and grow up with Christ’s forgiveness, so that they can have peace with God, with others, and with themselves. We pray especially for them, and pray for peace in the world.”
During the ceremony, the bishop sprinkled holy water on the new altar boys and altar servers, and blessed the vestments they held in their hands. After donning them on, ten altar boys and 24 altar servers prayed the Rosary together, expressing their faithfulness to Christ and their pledge to serve, to live out the spirit of the Gospel in their daily life, and to heed God’s call.
The altar boys’ society of the Cathedral have planned out for boys who have received their first communion to serve at the altar, help the priests, and do their best to protect and love the Eucharist, thus giving them an opportunity to nurture their vocation.
The altar servers, on the other hand, are forming those girls who have already received their first communion to accompany the Mass readers at Mass and to take care of the offertory collection with the aim of forming in them a generous and devout spirit.
Those interested in joining the altar boys or the altar servers can speak with the priests at the Cathedral.
