To celebrate the 450th anniversary of the Diocese of Macau, a “Sacred Music Concert” was held on Saturday evening, February 7, at the Cathedral of the Nativity of Our Lady, offering hymns of gratitude to God. Bishop Stephen Lee Bun-sang, head of the Holy See Study Mission Monsignor José Luis Díaz-Mariblanca Sánchez, representatives of different religions, faithful, and citizens were present during the concert. The two-hour event, with a ten-minute intermission, featured choirs from Macau, Hong Kong, and Guangzhou performing nearly twenty sacred hymns, including five joint pieces. Before the conclusion, special thanks were given to the donor of the new pipe organ, whose generosity and humility have greatly contributed to the development of sacred music in Macau and added solemnity to the evening event.
In his closing remarks, Bishop Lee described the concert as graceful and vibrant. He emphasized that, like the year-long celebrations, the event was not only a commemoration but also a symbol of the diocese’s journey together with the Macau community. Coincidently, the concert was held on the memorial of the Cathedral’s consecration anniversary, which made the celebration even more meaningful.
Bishop Lee further highlighted that through music, sports, and arts, the Diocese shares faith and joy with both local and overseas communities, embodying the spirit of “walking together” over the past 450 years. Under the zealous direction of Mr. Andrew Leung, music director of the Diocesan Liturgical Commission, the concert was a resounding success, bringing blessings of peace, harmony, and love to all were present. Notably, the new pipe organ will be solemnly blessed on February 25, followed by a performance by a French organist, adding another highlight to the 450th anniversary celebrations.
