Local students host visiting American counterparts from The Heights School

Yuet Wah College

On February 28, seventeen Yuet Wah Form 3 and 4 students guided a Macau tour for nine visiting American high school students from the Heights School in Washington DC., a preparatory school for boys in grades 3 to 12. The mission of the school is to assist parents in the intellectual, spiritual, and physical education of their sons. The cultural trip to Macau is part of the three-week exchange program the American students are doing at Tak Sun Secondary School in Hong Kong. Besides the American students, the group also included host families and Tak Sun students. The trip was coordinated between Mr. Joseph of Yuet Wah College and Mr. Bernie of Tak Sun School.

The one day tour covered visits to important landmarks of Macau that included St. Lawrence Church, St. Joseph’s Church where they say the relic of St. Francis Xavier are found, and the St. Paul Ruins. The students had the chance to also visit Yuet Wah College, which is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year, and played some sports during the visit. As all the visiting American students are Catholics, they attended the Mass at St. Francis Church before capping the visit with dinner and cultural program at Hon Lam Center.

The one day program provided both American and Macau students some form of cultural interaction, besides giving the Macau students the chance to practice their English. In particular, the American students were so impressed with what they saw in Macau. Before coming, they only had with them a picture of Hong Kong. Macau offered them a totally different experience than what they had so far in Hong Kong. They thought to themselves that Macau could be just another Mediterranean city with its unique Portuguese architecture.

The Yuet Wah College students are hoping that they can be given the chance in the future to visit The Heights in Washington DC and discover for themselves directly the American culture.
